Home Decorating – Painting an Outdated Wooden Staircase

Written by on June 29, 2009 – 8:36 pm -

Many American homes that were designed in mid 20th Century have the typical stairway that anyone can see as soon as you enter the front door. Often times that staircase is not wide enough and looking up; the landing leading to upstairs can appear very dark. A great, cost effective option to renew an outdated staircase is with paint. Painting wooden stairway parts is easy as long as you prepare properly and never cut corners when it comes to the quality of paint and brushes you use.

Fashionable paint finishes for a staircase include ultra glossy in bright white or a subtle off white to visibly brighten up the set of stairs. For a trendy, modern look, use darker colors and choose a quality paint with an upscale matte finish. Rich espresso brown is very popular right now.

Here are a couple of key points for painting a set of stairs successfully:
It is important that you get rid of all worn out paint or stain so you have only bare wood to work on.
Once all the final remnants of paint and stain are gone, sand the wooden risers and steps and balusters and railings using a fine grit sandpaper to get a smooth, ready to paint surface.
Make sure you select the finest quality floor paint you can afford. If you are unsure, consult with a paint specialist at Home Depot, Lowe’s or your local home hardware store and seek out advice. You need a hard wearing, durable product that is easy to wipe clean, will give you the color you want and will endure for a very long time.
Always apply a high grade primer to all parts of the staircase including the treads, the wood risers, the balusters, newel posts and railings. If you find that the wood really soaks in the primer severely, let the first coat dry fully and apply a second coat of primer. Allow to dry for a full twenty four (24) hrs.
Use excellent quality paint brushes to ensure a flawless finish and brush on the 1st coat of paint. If you can, allow twenty four hours between paint coats. If you have removed the old paint properly and chose a high quality specialty staircase paint, you will only need to apply two coats. In certain circumstances, you may need to brush on a 3rd coat, which is often true for deep base colors such as crimson red and navy blue.
don’t allow people or pets to walk on the painted staircase until it has absolutely dried. For fun, put on the final coat of paint on Friday late afternoon and then go away for a family weekend away and come home to a brand new set of stairs.

The best thing about painting is that is relatively inexpensive, you don’t have to hire an expensive professional and it is never permanent. If you really are disappointed the finished result, you can simply start again!

Solar Panel Information: Where to Go and What Questions to Ask

Written by on June 29, 2009 – 8:36 pm -

There was a time, not too long ago, when getting solar panels information was difficult.  The technology has been around for quite awhile, but it is only recently that it has become more available.

What has changed to make solar panels information so much more available?
Firstly we are all aware of the current environmental issues and how important it is to try to consider greener fuels when possible. But even if going green is not your main priority there are still other reasons why solar power has increased in popularity.  Many of the power companies are not doing deals whereby they will buy back any excess solar power which you do not need for your own uses.  This means that solar power can not only cut your bill, but could also make you money. The final reason for the boom in solar power is that since the governments are pro solar energy it means that there are grants to be got for the savvy home owner.

What to consider before you start you solar panels project.
As with any big project, and converting to solar power is a big project, you must consider feasibility and costs.  Start close to home; look at your current uses and break this down into actual power usage and costs.  It is important to understand that usage and cost are not the same thing.  Your current energy supplier can increase, or decrease the cost you are paying per unit of energy as and when they like. When you are checking over solar power you need to understand what your usage is and how much of this you would like to replace with solar power. It is unlikely that energy costs will drop dramatically, but it is feasible, that with the recession looming that the governments may try to cap the rises.

Where do you go for solar panels information?
It is important to get the best advice possible.  Most of the manufacturers of solar panels will have a technical and sales team.  These people are there to help you, it is in their interest to convert as many people as possible to solar power.  These sales teams should also be able to advise you on the grants available in your area for the type of solar panels installation you are looking at.

Finally, remember that going green is important to the environment, but it is also about doing what is best for you, your family and your finances, so make your decisions wisely.

Preventatives for Water Damage

Written by on June 27, 2009 – 1:57 am -

Can you imagine walking into your home after a nice relaxing vacation of four amazing days to a house filled ankle high with clear water. What a way to be welcomed home and thrown back into the stress of life, headfirst with so sign of the relief from the vaca you just had. Unfortunately, this is when most “disasters” seem to happen, while you are away from home.

Fortunately, there are precautions you can go through to keep this from happening to you or at least minimizing the damage that is done. If you plan to be away for a long while on vacation you may want to consider turning the water switch off at your house. This option may not be realistic though if you have plants that need watering or anything else that needs water regularly. On the other hand, if you don’t need the water on, that may be a great way to go. Another precaution you could use is having a friend stop by once or twice a day to make sure everything is in order at your home. Many advantages lie in this option aside from making sure there are no major issues going on, an example would be Phoenix water damage. They can also turn the lights on and off for day and night and check the mail or take the newspaper inside, this way people don’t realize the homeowners are gone.

Another precaution you can implement includes a home inspection of all water lines and pipes in the home. If your home is newer you may not have to do this very often, maybe once every couple of years. However, if you have an older home with older appliances, you may want to have an inspection done more regularly. A good rule of thumb is to discuss with the inspector the time-line you should follow after the first inspection is completed. This also includes a roof inspection. If the roof is older, have a roofer out to make sure no tiles need to be replaced and that all the seals are still intact. To follow up on seals, don’t forget the windows and doors, which can be just as harmful when it comes to water damage in Phoenix. A gradual leak during a storm can seep into the drywall of your home and cause mold to grow without your knowledge that there is even a problem.

Sometimes, no matter how much precaution we take, water damage simply can’t be avoided. Prepare yourself for the worst by knowing who to contact to replace bad or damaged flooring, what the best way to dry up water and moisture is and who to contact for mold problems. Hopefully, with the right preparations, you can make a very stressful ordeal into an easier managed problem and have it cleaned up quicker.

Retractable Screens Priceless to Those Who Enjoy Being Outdoors

Written by on June 26, 2009 – 8:59 pm -

Garages are not only great places to park your vehicles, but also great locations for holding get-togethers and having parties. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult to maximize the open-aired aspects of open garages while keeping the bugs out. There are, though, ways by which people can achieve the perfect balance between inddors and exterior. Namely, retractable screens.

Using garage screens is the best way of accomplishing this feat, as they are specifically created for just such a purpose. Using a screen to cover the open end of your garage has the advantage of not obstructing the outward view. After all, if the entire reason behind maximizing garage usage rests on the fact that it allows you to draw on the outside atmosphere, then preserving that feeling is of great importance. The right garage screens will do just that. It divide indoors and outdoors without being visually overt enough to ruin the illusion. It will not only do this visually, it will also provide enough ventilation to allow for the passage and flow of air.

Because these retractable screens are so sleek, many people may become concerned over whether these barriers will prove effective at keeping the outside where it belongs, outdoors. This is a natural concern, but there is no real need for worrying. The sturdy nature of these garage screens and their frames means that they will easily prevent bugs from sneaking in. Because these screens are so tightly constructed, they also keep any annoying mosquitoes from crossing through the garage entry.

The usefulness of these garage screens is only crowned by their overall feasibility. The very nature of their design means there is a limited number of pieces, and the overall installation is comparatively simple. The manufacturing process is also adaptable enough to provide screens for nearly any opening – single and double door garages and more. All of these features work towards making the choice to purchase and install a screen feasible for many homeowners.

Combine all of these positives: the appeal of the outside, inside comfort, and the simple design, and you have a product which is unrivaled in nearly every appreciable aspect. That alone makes garage screens enormously valuable to people wanting to get the most out of their garages. In addition, Stoett provides a retractable window screen with similar benefits.  Check out their site at www.stoett.com.

Choose The Right Sink For Your Kitchen

Written by on June 25, 2009 – 5:37 pm -

Normal 0

Stainless steel is a popular choice for kitchen sinks these days. It’s almost an automatic pick for many. There are many options in shape, and you may be confused about what will work best in your kitchen. If you’re struggling to reach a decision and don’t know what you really need, here is some insight that will help you choose the right style sink for your home.

What Kind of Use Will the Sink Get?

When deciding between the sizes and number of bowls for your sink, consider how it needs to function. Think about the following:

  • the size of your family
  • how often you entertain
  • how often you cook
  • the type of meals you prepare

If you do a lot of cooking, especially from scratch, you may want a double bowl sink. One side can hold dishes and pots while the other can be saved for preparing the food. You may even want a built-in work surface, depending on how much chopping and dicing you do. On that note, an offset double bowl sink may work well for you. One side is always smaller than the other, which is good for food preparation.

If you don’t have a large family or don’t prepare many homemade meals, you may prefer to save counter space and go for a smaller, single bowl sink. Getting one just deep enough for the occasional large pot may be all you need.

If you have a large family or kitchen or a kitchen island, consider a bar sink in addition to the main sink. Bar sinks are usually smaller but can expand your work area in a kitchen.

Triple bowl sinks are another option but require a lot extra space. Three bowls of varying sizes allow for different levels of functionality. One side may be good for prepping while another is better for soaking or washing. If you have the room and you need a heavy-duty sink, this may be the one for you.

Do you have a dishwasher? And if not, that fact will play a major factor in your decision. A very small sink won't do the trick. One large, single bowl or an equal size double bowl sink might be just what you need.

You have to consider your mounting preference. You have the choice of either a top mount or undermount sink. This is entirely personal preference and is mostly about looks. Top mount sinks do keep water off of the countertop. But many prefer the seamless and modern look of a sink.

Making Your Choice

There are a lot of options in stainless steel sinks but you can eliminate quite a few just by considering a few lifestyle facts. Take the size of your family and your entertaining and cooking habits into consideration. Also, the size of your kitchen and whether or not you have a dishwasher should come into play. And, of course, your own personal style will help in making the decision.
